Writing is a form of self-expression that comes to me a lot more easily than any other to be honest. I’m not going to say that it’s true for everyone, however it has that proper balance of honesty, personal and impersonal that sets me at ease. I’ve tried to pursue it as much as possible and luckily my work has caught on amongst many people. Interestingly, or ironically enough, my most notable work is on interpersonal relationships, specifically my experiences with dating and romantic relationships. I feel that people with autism, in fact people in general have enough problems with interpersonal relationships for us to not have a conversation about it.
So I thought that someone needs to put it out there for everyone that relationships are confusing and you don’t need to feel bad about it. It’s just about sticking to it until you get the ropes down. When I wrote Love is Too Hard: The Dating (Mis)Adventures of a Man with Autism, I was trying to explain to the community at large that the pursuit of love is going to be rather difficult no matter who we are and the need to not give up on the idea. In this process I tried to normalize the ways of the autistic community and tried to relate to the personal concerns of all people regardless of whether they had Autism or Not.
Of course I loved writing too much to just stop there, it’s something of a personal passion now that I try to explore as much as I can. I think that it’s one of the best ways to articulate my thoughts and I created my writing platforms to get my word across to as wide a population as possible. In my blogs on the Thought Catalog or The Mighty, I write about my life experiences, my relationships and my journey with autism to speak to an audience of parents or autistic individuals who may be going through the same struggles as I did.
There is much to be said for the value of personal struggle when it comes to inspiring people and helping them.
I just want a greater number of people to know that if I can do it, then they can too and that I will always be there to help them if they ever need me.
